For those who meditate by concentrating on something intensely by focusing their eyes on a candle or some other object have similarities to the use of eye fixation in hypnosis. People also tend to use a mantra in meditation, a word or phrase repeated over and over again until they are relaxed. This could be considered similar to word suggestion consistent with the relaxed state by hypnosis.
If you sat two people side by side, one in hypnosis and one in meditation, it would probably be hard to say which person was in hypnosis and which one was meditating. They may be simply two different belief systems wrapped around the same sort of state of mind. Meditation could be another means of entering the hypnotic state.
The act of meditation is often linked with a certain set of spiritual beliefs. While this differs greatly from the purposes of hypnosis, they both invoke altered states through concentration. Both hypnosis and meditation can each be used to eliminate physical discomfort, bring about balance to the system, and reduce mental and emotional stress. In fact, deep relaxation in any form can provide these benefits.
However, the belief in the spiritual aspect of meditation and the deepening of that connection is a benefit that lies solely in the realm of meditation. Hypnosis is usually not considered a valid way of strengthening your spirituality or embarking on a spiritual journey.
Hypnotherapy and self hypnosis are geared toward benefiting specific issues and bringing about behavioral change, such as stopping smoking. Meditation might not be the best way to resolve emotional conflicts or stop unwanted behaviors. So while there is certainly some common ground, the purpose and personal use of each are quite different.
If relaxation is what a person seeks, then both hypnosis and meditation could suffice. We know the benefits of relaxation alone are innumerable. Yet if you seek solutions to emotional issues or desire to bring about changes in your behavior, then both hypnosis and meditation are good options to offer direct paths towards resolution.

PSYCHOLOGY SIMPLY BYPASSED!
Comment by DR A K KULSHRESHTHA April 19, 2009 @ 4:58 amWELL DONE!!!
Psychology tends to get hung up on the problems of the left brain and its disturbed ego without being able to claim any significant benefits…bypassing this approach offers an understanding of the health and wholeness of the right brain.
Comment by Papa April 19, 2009 @ 3:13 pmI do believe, we as humans, must evolve into mastering the art of intwining the energy of both right and left hemisphere. we cannot live in the right brain alone. Both sides need each other greatly. They are indeed interdependant of one another. Each is the portal for the other. The right brain can only enter certain areas of understanding through the left and the opposite holds true for the left brain in reaching “knowing”. I believe they are meant to work in harmony. You are not a more evolved being if you are mainly a right brainer; Too much right brain removes you from society. No man is an island, but most strongly right brain dwellers prove other wise. The left brain allows us to stay tapped into the frequency of the biological world; The Earthly world. As long as there is an inbalance of power between right and left there will never be true genius. The brain is a WHOLE. “Force, no matter how concealed, begets resistance”. when both sides surrender to each other they will finally be in harmony;Their energy will flow with no resistance through their common denominator and in this harmony our whole brain will come alive. Can neuroscientists and quantum physicists even imagine a world where human beings actually utilize and exersise 100% of their biological and spiritual brain together with full awareness? All the answers to the universe/multiverses will be in plain view, and in our hands….can you imagine such a world? I can!
